Color me more than a little jaded, but I’m a firm believer that Everything is a Remix. Does that mean I don’t have a gee whiz gene, or never get excited over something that remixes old and makes it new again?
No, and here’s a perfect example. A note taking app for the Mac that is handy, quick, elegant, just the right features, and priced right. Oh, and there’s just one thing more it needs.
Notes apps for the Mac are a dime a dozen, and sometimes less. It’s easy to take notes on a Mac, but it’s more effort to find a really pleasant to use apps that does more, but not too much.
That’s Ideally, a quick notes, files, and idea keeper app for the Mac. Ideally doesn’t really do anything new. Notes apps are everywhere.
Instead, Ideally is a mashup of simple notes apps, with just the right blend of basic features for anyone who needs to take quick notes for ideas, details, and save files or photos with each.
Sure, the free Evernote and other apps do the same kind of thing, more or less, but in the case of Ideally, less is more.
Ideally is instantly usable. It does not live in the Dock, instead taking up residence in the Mac’s Menubar for easy access from within any open app on the Mac.
Click the Ideally icon in the Menubar and you’re ready to take a note, capture an idea, or file away a file or photo with the note.
Ideally is friendly and approachable, and perfectly self explanatory.
For example, settings are nominal. Have Ideally float above other apps when in use, launch as your Mac starts up, link and save files to Dropbox, and use hotkeys to start up or add a note.
The Ideally note-taking area is familiar, and instantly usable. Just start writing, and add a file by drag and drop. Notes are stored on Dropbox, so available Mac-to-Mac.
The Ideally mashup of features makes it very simple to use on a Mac, and therein lies the only major issue I see thus far. It’s crying for an iPhone version. More of my quick note taking is handled on iPhone and iPad these days than the Mac, and I suspect that’s the case with many others as well.
Still, if all you need is a quick way to create and store a note and a file, Ideally is good and instantly usable.
