Simple enhancements and photo galleries– free in iPhoto– were just not enough. Mac users who want professional level photo collages are in luck. Some of them are free and easily shared with friends and family with just a few clicks.
Free, Or Not So Free?
My Mac is home to four or five different photo collage apps. The Mac App Store has a bunch, many are free, most cost a few dollars, and others are not sure what their price tag really is.
Enter one easy-to-use collage maker that is both free and expensive. CollageIt is pretty good. It comes with dozens of professionally designed templates.
Grab photos from iPhoto and drop them on CollageIt, click around on a few tools for space, margin, rotation, and border, and your collage is good to go.
To be honest about it, CollageIt is fun to use. Select a template, drop photos onto the layout, adjust the slider bars, and presto!
What’s not to like?
I found five different versions of CollageIt, which range in price from free to $29.90. Nearly $30 is a bit steep considering other collage-making apps have similar features and cost just a few dollars.
So, CollageIt Pro from the developer is priced at $19.90. If you buy from the Mac App Store, it’s $4.99 (for now– looks like prices change quickly).
There’s also a CollageIt 3 Pro at $9.99, and a CollageIt 3 Free (for free)– the newest versions (the Mac App Store doesn’t do app upgrade pricing)– and a CollegeIt Free (also for free). Any app that’s free but that also has a version with a price tag is officially the try-before-you-buy version.
CollageIt 3 Pro is the newest of the bunch, and though it does much the same thing as the less expensive versions, it does come with dozens more templates, more styles, dozens of background patterns, and many more effects. It also supports collages up to 200 photos and a collage size of 40-inches by 40-inches.
If you want more professional level features, this is the one to buy, but it’s worth trying the free version first.
