Instagram is also free. What’s not to like? There’s no Instagram app for the Mac. It’s Android or iPhone and nothing else. Despair not, dear Mac user. There are Mac apps that view Instagram photos.
Look, But Don’t Touch
It’s difficult to argue with the success of Instagram’s policy of keeping the app on smartphones and not on desktop or notebook PCs.
That ban hasn’t stopped a number of clever app developers from creating Instagram accessible apps.
In other words, you still can’t upload photos to Instagram from your Mac, but you can view the photo stream of your account and those you follow.
The Mac App Store has nearly a dozen Instagram-like apps, including my favorite, InstaFeed, which lets you browse your Instagram account, view photos of those you follow, and even view video clips.
InstaFeed lets you organize and download photos, like photos on Instagram, even save hashtags and favorite users. And, there’s built-in sharing with Facebook and Twitter.
That makes it similar to InstaDesk, another popular Instagram-like app, which also views feeds, comments, profiles, and followers, and lets you share photos to Facebook and Twitter.
InstaDesk lets you download both photos and videos (drag and drop) and receive notifications when followers comment or like a photo.
As with all these Instagram-like apps, you’ll need an Instagram account. You just won’t be able to upload photos from your Mac to Instagram.
Head for Instagram is yet another Mac app that has fewer features and a lower price tag, but is popular among Mac users.
InstaReel for Instagram has most of the features of the more popular feature leaders, but also costs a few dollars less.
One app that most Mac-owning Instagram users may want is InstaBackup. It does what you think. One click and all the photos you’ve uploaded to Instagram are downloaded and backed up to your Mac for safekeeping.
Maybe one day Instagram will do what Flickr has already done and make it a simple process for Mac users to upload photos instead of having to use the iPhone.
