Learning to type should be an absolute requirement for every high school graduate, and part of the curriculum of every middle school student. Here’s a Mac app that helps you improve your typing speed and accuracy without typing faster.
Expanding Text Automatically
Mac users have a limited number of options to improve typing accuracy and efficiency but the one I most recommend for Mac power user wannabes is TextExpander.
Think of this as an on-the-fly typing accelerator tool. Type in an abbreviation and TextExpander expands the matching text instantly.
Think about the possibilities (especially if you type many of the same words and phrases over and over).
You tap a few user defined keystroke combos and TextExpander springs into action and automatically types your snippets of text; perfectly, accurately, and blazingly fast.
It all starts by setting up a few snippets of frequently used text and assigning them to a hotkey combo; an abbreviation you can easily remember.
Snippets are easily organized into folders, set up by name, and can even have a sound attached, and can be assigned to open within a specific Mac app.
Use it for signatures, addresses, boiler plate text, programming code, filling in forms, and more. TextExpander also autocorrects typos as you type.
Preferences are extensive and may tend to overwhelm if you’ve never used a text expander app before, so start with a few simple items– signatures, addresses, anything you type over and over.
As you build a library of text snippets you can add to the tricks by using TextExpander to fill in forms– those web or PDF forms which require the same information all the time– name, address, phone number, email address, etc.
TextExpander is great at entering the current date and time as you time. It can even shorten long website URLs on the fly, and can paste in clipboard content into a snipper of text.
This app is just crazy great and one of the best ways to increase productivity and efficiency by typing actually faster than you can type but with more accuracy.
I don’t know of an easier, faster way to take an average Mac user and turn them into a power user. Here’s the most obvious caveat. Because TextExpander loads up and runs in the background, you really need a newer, faster Mac with plenty of RAM. On older Macs it can be somewhat laggy. Otherwise, try Typinator which costs a bit less, does a bit less.
