What I want in a password manager is probably what you want. Safety. Security. Quick access. Cloud storage. And synchronize between Mac, iPhone, and iPad. 1Password is considered top of the line, but using it on Mac, iPhone, and iPad will set you back almost $70. If you’re on a budget, try pwSafe instead.
Fewer Bells & Whistles
If nothing improves without change, then having to spend more money for the same thing is a change without improvement.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been a 1Password user for years, but the latest versions– Mac and iPhone– came with a hefty price tag even for current users.
That got me to looking at alternatives like pwSafe which is less expensive, less complicated, yet works well on my Mac, my iPhone, and even my iPad.
And, I spent less than $9 for apps that run on all three devices and sync up via iCloud. Add a password or item on the Mac and it syncs to the iPhone (and vice versa).
The pwSafe user interface isn’t as cumbersome as 1Password (fewer features that I don’t use), or as visually stylish, but functionality is similar– unlimited passwords, multiple fields, cloud sync, 256-bit encryption, and it generates strong passwords.
pwSafe borrows from the popular Password Safe project which has been around for years. Setting up a new password is simple, and passwords can be organized into groups.
pwSafe lets you create multiple ‘Safes’ which are documents that hold multiple passwords, each one password protected. It even logs a history of usage so you can see if anyone else has used pwSafe.
If you’ve used any password manager on a Mac you’ll be right at home in pwSafe. It’s not complicated to setup and use, and it features one-click login and password, including the option to open a specific URL, and fill in the login ID and password. And, you can choose where to save each password or group– anywhere on your Mac or iCloud.
1Password offers far more features, of course. But if your basic needs are a secure list of login IDs and passwords, with quick access and auto fill in to a website, pwSafe is a good alternative that’s less expensive, less complicated.
