Mac users can rejoice in the magic of technology from the 1990s with Smoovie, the simple stop motion animation app that brings modern video techniques to an ancient but time honored movie making genre– animations.
Animation, Effects, Time Lapse
Long before the computer generated graphics of Jurassic Park there was claymation and stop motion animation. Now you can relive those glory years with digital technology in Smoovie.
There’s no better way to learn than by doing and Smoovie lets you create stop motion animations and time lapse movies right on a Mac.
Smoovie comes with 18 live effects known by the movie making community but easily implemented on your Mac.
There’s green screen Chroma Key, Overlay, Color Splash, Toon, Marker Pen, Luminance Mask, Sepia, Invert, Gloom, Bloom, Blur, Crystalize, and many others.
Smoovie also lets you create time lapse recordings from video clips, and you can drop in music tracks from iTunes.
Each effect in Smoovie can be customized and adjusted with ease. The green screen effect means your animation can be dropped into any movie clip. Effects can be chained together for a great animation effect.
Basic animation techniques, including onion skinning, are easy in Smoovie. So is the Scenes Editor, a good starting point for budding animation artists. Images, photos, and video clips are easily imported into Smoovie scenes.
Projects can be exported (and imported) between Macs, and shared online. Animation has made a come back in GIFs, but Smoovie takes it to another level.
Animation can be tricky to master but Smoovie comes with decent built-in help screens, and additional support details for effects and other features are on the app’s website. It may take awhile to master some of the effects, though, but if you’ve ever wanted to get into stop motion animation, this is the Mac app to try first.
Smoovie may appear comical, but it’s a good app with a price tag to match.
