Long URLs are the bane of email. Copy a long URL from a browser window or link into an email message and more often than not the link will break, rendering the URL useless to the recipient. Is there a better way? Short URLS. All you need is Short Menu in your Mac’s Menubar.
Goodbye, Long URL
It’s easy to understand the need for long URLs. Links are often embedded with additional code so websites can track where a click originated.
The problem is that the longer the link, the more it is likely to break or be miscopied. That’s where URL shortening comes in, and where Short Menu becomes so valuable.
URL shortening simply takes a long and convoluted URL and replaces it with a much smaller URL which then redirects the link– using an HTTP redirect– back to the original location.
Short Menu will shorten long URLs by using one of 20 different URL shortening services, or you can customize your own.
The app sits in the Menubar so it’s easily accessible from within any app, but it can also automate the URL shortening process. If you have accounts with bit.ly, Droplr, or CloudApp, Short Menu lets you use those services, too.
Short Menu also saves all the shortened URLs you created in a history log. There’s even an extension to add Short Menu capability to the popular PopClip copy and paste app for the Mac.
This clever app is fast, easy to setup and use, and makes quick work of URL shortening so you don’t have to visit a website like TinyURL to get a short URL.
