Keeping the Mac’s Desktop clean of clutter and nicely organized takes real effort. Files and folders tend to collect over time, just as they do on a real desktop. There is a way to keep it neat and tidy, automatically, and it’s free.
Tidy Up The Desktop
In the era when skeuomorphism is being diminished on both iOS and OS X, we’re still stuck with the digital Desktop metaphor.
Desktop on the Mac works like my real desktop. It’s where everything collects until I get the time, nerve, or inclination to clean it up.
DeskTopTidy is a free Mac app which does the Desktop clean up for you. One click, and you’re done.
Whatever files and folders on your Mac’s Desktop get stored to a folder you designate and sorted by date so you can always find what you thought you had on your Desktop.
This is the digital version of my real desktop cleaning method, but the end result is that everything is better organized.
For my real desktop, I would just grab an empty copier paper box, set it on my desk chair, push the chair and box up against the desk, and the push everyone on the desk into the copier paper box.
Clean desktop. You can do kind of the same thing on your Mac. Create a folder, give it a date as part of the name, then drag and drop everything else that’s on the Mac’s Desktop to the folder.
DeskTopTidy just does it automatically and organizes better. All you have to do is tell DeskTopTidy which folder to put the items into, and then remember where it is when you need a file.
