What’s missing is a grammar checker and context checker. Most of my misspellings these days are related to context– a word spelled correctly but wrong for the context. Hear vs. here is a good example. So, take a look at this free grammar checker.
Not A Typo Checker
As a teacher, one of my favorite websites is FunnyTypos. What we do to language, any language, is always good for a chuckle.
Beyond the occasional typo or autocorrect mistake, there’s good old fashioned spelling and grammar. The former is built in to OS X, the latter not so popular.
Spelling and grammar checking is what you get with 1Checker. Spell checking and grammar checking. It’s free for the Mac (and available online, for Windows, Word, and Outlook).
1Checker is a spin off from the University of Cambridge with a focus on artificial intelligence and natural language processing technology so it has some credible chops.
What it does is rather simple. Enter your text and let 1Checker do its thing. Like this:
1Checker works well but it’s unlike most spelling checkers or grammar checkers you may have used in the past. Yes, it’s free, but you’ll have to register to use it (also free).
You’ll also need an internet connection to use the built-in Google Translation service. Instead of applying hard and fast grammar rules to your text, 1Checker uses artificial intelligence technology to try to understand and interpret what you mean, and make spelling, grammar, and word choice suggestions.
For example, I put my article into 1Checker and this was the result (click on the images below to view a larger, pop up version).
Here are the details and suggested changes.
Not perfect, obviously. Context is difficult, even for sophisticated artificial intelligence technology.
But not bad for free.
