That means some tools are completely unnecessary, we don’t need them because the functions already exist within OS X. Such is the case of this free Dock shortcut tool. Get it and use it anyway.
Doing Basics Different
While Apple’s original ‘Think Different’ advertising campaign may not have been grammatically correct, it highlighted what Apple does best. Think differently.
So it is with this free utility for your Mac’s Dock. It’s called Functional and it does what your Mac already does, but maybe a little easier.
If you’re at all like me, you tweak your Mac here and there to create a workflow that works for you.
I tweak the Dock. Apps are moved around to specific locations, but I also customize the Documents side of the Dock.
Functional does the same thing by creating a folder that when you click it opens up a number of custom options we use every day.
Take a look.
The options themselves are nothing to write home about. Functional merely puts them in perhaps a more convenient location.
Click the Functional folder and the pop up reveals the options for Sleep, Shut Down, Restart, and Log Out. All are easily visible and quickly performed with a click. Yes, your Mac does that already from the Apple menu in the Menubar. Doing the same thing from the Dock may be preferable.
Not bad for free, right?
Now, check out other apps from the same developer. Hypnotize is a great timer to shut down your Mac according to a schedule (great for watching a move on Netflix or iTunes). Another utility is called Obscurity and hides files and folders from view in the Finder.
Simple. Elegant. Free.
