We have a login ID and password to prevent others from using our Mac while we’re away. Some expensive security apps can snap pictures and lock down your Mac and notify you when it’s lost or stolen. Here’s an app that’s both fun and security minded.
Detecting Motion On The Cheap
When I’m not on the road with my trusty dusty MacBook I’m dwelling in a cubicle in a cubicle farm with other Mac and Windows PC users.
Office life being what it is there are times when I have to step away from my cubicle, hence the need for the login and password when I come back.
Because it was just so cheap I added Portal Turret to my Mac?
What’s it do? It’s a motion sensor that uses the Mac’s built-in iSight camera to check for visible motion.
Once detected, Portal Turret plays a sound. This is where you get what you pay for.
It will play any of the system sounds, and not one of them is probably sufficiently terror inducing to deter a would-be thief or inquisitive office mate.
However, it will play a custom sound that you create yourself. I chose to record a simple message in my toughest, roughest, gruffest voice
‘Stop. Warning. Step Away From The Mac (insert long pause here). You Have Been Warned. Authorities Have Been Alerted. Please Leave The Cubicle Immediately.’
Trust me, that kind of message makes anyone nearby duck or scurry for cover.
It’s not bad for 99-cents, and it’s a good way to add a little more security to your Mac while having some fun with co-workers.
There’s a slider which adjusts sensitivity of the motion detection, and an option to turn on the motion detector after the Mac has been idle for a set period of time.
It’s nice and it’s fun and it needs a little more. Some really bad ass alerts and alarms would be a nice touch.
