Open the Finder. Select a few files. Right-click and select the Compress menu. Viola! An archived file in the standard zip format, ready to be saved, emailed, uploaded, shared. Double-click and the archived file quickly opens. What could be easier or better than free? This.
The Archiver’s Archiver
Archive tools abound on the Mac App Store, and they’re following the recent trend– minimal features, minimal price tag.
For Mac users who need a little more than an archive fewer or a simple file compressor, try Archiver so you can see the kind of app that experienced archivers use.
Don’t let the simple and self descriptive name fool you. Archiving .zip files is one thing. Handling a few dozen other formats is something else again.
Archiver starts with a simple drag and drop interface. Drag an archive to see what’s inside.
Drag a bunch of files or folders to have Archive archive them. What makes an archive tool worthwhile is flexibility so this one handles far more compression and decompression methods than most.
Archiver lets you view the files within an archive without opening the archive first (take that, OS X Finder). Thank you Quick Look.
If you want, you can extract only the files within an archive that you want or need at the moment. Again, no need to open the archive first.
Choose the archive name, archive type (for audio, photos, etc.), and Archiver creates the archive that matches your needs. It even handles split archive, encrypted and password protected archives.
Alright, Archiver does much more than the Finder’s archive zip tool, and far more than most of the cheap archive tools on the Mac App Store.
What archive file formats are supported?
Zip and Winzip, RAR and WinRAR, 7zip, Stuffit, Stuffit Expander, Tar, Tar Gzip, Tar Bzip2, Tar Z, CPIO, Archiver, XAR, ARJ, Linux RMP, CAM, LhA, BinHex, MacBinary, PAX, HA archiver, Amiga DMS, LhF, LZX and others. Some of those are seldom used but if you need it, it’s there.
Not every Mac user needs such a Swiss Army Knife-like archive tool. But if you do, this is one to get.
