After all, Apple has a string of wildly successful, profit-generating, and industry disrupting products in many categories. Google? Uh, how about slowing revenue and slimming profits in its highly touted search engine advertising business?
Google Has A Pony
My grandmother in Scotland had a pony which I would ride when we visited there in my youth. Grandma was the only person I knew with a pony. One pony.
Google has a pony, too. It’s a one trick pony made up of a dominating search engine advertising business.
Google’s one-trick pony is sick, too. Apparently it’s unable to procreate.
Despite spending billions of dollars on Android OS for smartphones and tablets, and giving the package away for free, most of Google’s mobile device revenue comes from… drum roll, please… Apple’s iPhone and iPad customers.
That puts Google in a precarious position with device manufacturing partners (it must sting Samsung, HTC, et al that Google sells their own branded smartphones and tablets), it’s also in a difficult spot with Apple.
Apple hates Google these days, and for good reason, but Google needs Apple to shore up its faltering mobile device business.
Let me compare ponies between Apple and Google. Google has one. A single pony; a search engine advertising business that makes up well over 90-percent of the company’s revenue and profits.
Despite all the noise about drones, and wearables, and fiber optics, and iGlasses, and contact lens sensors, Google is all hat and no cattle (see what a trip to Texas can do). Those aren’t products. They’re ideas. They’re a glass wall in Google’s R&D building.
Meanwhile, Apple has a growing stable of ponies, each of which is highly profitable and tops in their respective industry segments. Mac? Half the industry’s profits. iPhone? 80-percent of the industry’s profits? Ditto for iPad. Then there’s the app stores, the iTunes music, movie, and TV business, and the step child hobby, Apple TV, also worth a billion dollars.
Why isn’t this disparity clear to the gnomes on Wall Street, or more obvious to the technorati elite charlatans running the media?
Apple has a stable of healthy horses. Google has a sick pony.
