First, patent trolls come out of the woodwork like cockroaches looking for a free meal. Second, everybody with an opinion knows exactly what Apple should and should not do with the pile of riches the company is sitting on. If not Netflix, what should Apple buy?
Behind Door #3, Monte
The past few months have been horribly funny for everyone watching Apple. Technology pundits and Wall Street’s most famous charlatans have been calling for Apple to “Buy something. Anything. Now.”
Beats Electronics and Apple have yet to deny they’re about to do the deed, but those same tech pundits and charlatans now say, “No. Not that!”
Instead, Rocco Pendola, one of the foremost members of the aforementioned two classes of Apple watchers, says Apple should buy Hulu, the other purveyor of streaming TV shows and movies, but not named Netflix.
Why should Apple buy Hulu?
Well, because, you know. Lots of money. Besides, everyone knows that Apple is missing out on the subscription streaming media business with iTunes.
The real money losses are with Netflix, Google, and Amazon’s streaming media businesses, not iTunes.
A Problem Watcher
Color me more than an Apple fan or a tech pundit mistress. I’m a problem watcher. Hulu, like Netflix, or any entity that deals with content, is a problem.
Hulu is owned by NBC Universal (a part of Comcast), Disney, and 21st Century Fox; all content creators looking for a way to get more money from watchers of their content.
By buying Hulu or Netflix what does Apple gain that it does not already possess? Apple’s brand name is higher. Apple’s technology for streaming is already in place thanks to iTunes.
Apple’s problem isn’t the technology to promote, sell, and stream content. The problem is the content players themselves. They want to keep as much of the money and as much of the control over the streaming business as they can.
Nobody in that business wants Apple to do to TV and movies what the company did to digital music downloads.
If Apple bought Netflix, would that guarantee all of Netflix’s content would come along? If Apple bought Hulu, would that guarantee all of Hulu’s content would come along? Nobody in the industry has all the content and content players are not likely going to give it to Apple to sell.
