Color me somewhat dated, but I remember the so-called ‘new math’ and what it did to students back in the day to create a hatred for math.
Even in the world of mathematics there’s something new under the sun. It’s called GeoGebra, a dynamic math app for your computer that does an interesting mashup of arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and calculus.
Every Math Everywhere, Free
GeoGebra is a teacher’s delight. It works almost everywhere and it’s free. Mac, Windows PC, Linux PCs, Android devices, iPhone and iPad.
It’s fully interactive and lets students walk through math problems in a setting they can relate to.
Objects in GeoGebra are dynamically linked and allows students to connect geometric, algebraic, and numeric representations.
Because everything is dynamic changing points, vectors, lines, conic sections and any functions can be altered on the fly. Manipulate equations and coordinates directly. Plot functions and use interactive sliders to find symbolic derivatives or use built-inc commands.
Abstract mathematical concepts can be brought to life in minutes using GeoGebra. Adjust angles, add or change measurements, and make calculations where students can actually see a real-world use.
GeoGebra also has GeoGebraTube with a library of additional worksheets and other materials provided by GeoGebra users. If you teach or have students working their way through advanced math, GeoGebra is another free tool which can help to improve skills.
Highly recommended.
