Instagram makes it easy to share photos online but it comes with one crippling problem. It’s mobile only. iPhone, Android smartphone (works on iPad using the iPhone app). Your Mac can’t upload photos to Instagram. But this Mac app does everything else.
Carousel Projector? Really?
Until Instagram opens up the photo sharing service to Mac and Windows users, we’ll have to get by with the likes of the Carousel app.
About all that Carousel does not do is upload photos to Instagram. It lets you explore Instagram, view your personal feed, check out popular photos, and much more.
More? Carousel lets you comment, like, and save photos from Instagram.
Photos on Instagram can be saved back to your Mac for backup or inclusion in iPhoto. From within Carousel you can search for people and Instagram tags, and click to see all the photos you’ve liked.
Most of the tools and options you have in the Instagram app for iPhone are available in Carousel, including comment moderation, single photo view, photo location, and options to pin tags, locations and people in the search tab.
Photos can be viewed in full resolution and simply dragged and dropped to you Mac. New photos can be viewed by setting up notifications.
Carousel is attractive, too, and comes with four different viewing themes. You’ll still need an Instagram account, and your account details are what makes Carousel work. It’s not Instagram, but it’s the next best thing to Instagram on your Mac.
My only objections to Carousel is the app’s icon. It’s an old Kodak Carousel slide projector from the last century (about the last time I used film on a camera).
