Imagine a source of great games from the past century, all rolled up as Dashboard Widgets or mini-apps, faithfully recreated for your entertainment pleasure. Even better, most of these classic games are free, which means playing pleasure is a click away. Or, a number of clicks.
What. Price. Glory.
The website is called WidgetGmer and it features many of the games you grew up, the kind that you’ll remember with fondness, even if you don’t remember how to play each one.
For example, there’s the RetroGmer package of arcade styles games Super Mario, Pac Man, Space Invaders, and my favorite Donkey Kong.
Remember Asteroid? It’s in the RetroGmer package along with Space Invaders Classic, Cosmic Defender, StarshipFighter, Extreme Rally Run, 3D Paradise Paintball and Crashdrive.
The list goes on and these are near faithful reproductions which can be played on the Mac’s desktop or online.
What’s the catch?
Not everything plays on the Mac and you have to wade through a number of arcane menus, far too many ads, and more than a few broken download links to get to the good stuff.
Unfortunately, these games will waste battery power on your MacBook as much as they waste time. You’ll need Flash to play many of the games, but if free is what you’re after, and you don’t mind wading through far too many game titles to get to the good stuff, it’s worth a look.
