Every Mac running OS X comes with a built-in tool called Activity Monitor. It’s in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. What it does is tell you a bit about how your Mac is behaving at the moment, but it’s nothing at all like this app.
iStat Menus Because iCan
Mac users have options to purchase any one of a number of utilities which monitors OS X and the Mac itself. This is one of the best.
Install iStat Menus and from the Mac’s Menubar you get a quick view of how your Mac is behaving itself.
That means statistics, and not just the common everyday stats in Activity Monitor.
One click gets you a list of statistics and information that can help you diagnose a problem, or simply see what’s going on with the network, the Mac’s CPU, temperature sensors, and which apps are sucking up both CPU and GPU, as well as system RAM.
MacBook users will love the built-in battery monitoring, as well as battery levels for connected Bluetooth devices (Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, et al).
Click on iStat Menus and view which apps are using the most of your Mac.
That’s right. iStat Menus displays statistics on a per-app basis. You also get a laundry list of network statistics, including Wi-Fi networks. Even the Mac’s GPU is monitored in the Menubar.
Unlike some Mac monitoring tools, iStat Menus also features an array of world clocks which can display, with a click, time in any time zone or city, with other details– sunrise, sunset, and more.
Most modern Macs come with an array of sensors– fans, temperature, power and more. These can be monitored and controlled in iStat Menus. Yes, fans. The stander disk usage and activity functions are monitored as is S.M.A.R.T. status of your Mac’s storage. If there’s another Mac statistical reporting and management app that does more I haven’t found it.
The only real negative issue that bothers me about the latest version is the number of background monitoring processes it keeps going just to monitor your Mac’s other processes. But in the age of plenty of RAM and powerful Intel CPUs I don’t worry much about it.
