What’s the prevailing common wisdom about who won the smartphone and tablet wars? Android or iPhone and iPad? If you selected Window or Android then you win the common wisdom prize of the day. A cure for foot-in-mouth disease. Here’s how to cure the malady.
Facts Is Facts
Here’s an argument I hear from friends and colleagues from time to time. “Hey, Bambi. Android is beating iPhone just like Windows beat the Mac. How does that make you feel?”
It makes me feel as though I should reconsider who I hang out with because some folks are devoid both of tact and fact.
Common wisdom is just wrong.
First of all, Windows is an operating system, while the Mac is a computer. So putting both in the same comparison is wrong.
Second, Android is an operating system, while the iPhone is a smartphone. So putting both in the same comparison is wrong.
Next to last, how is it exactly that the Mac lost to Windows when Windows PC makers have trouble making a profit (the Mac owns about 50-percent of the entire PC industry’s profits), Microsoft itself is looking for different revenue streams know that both Windows and Office are relics of the past in a future dominated by mobile devices where Microsoft has no presence?
Lastly, how is it exactly that iPhone lost to Android when Android device makers have trouble making a profit (iPhone and iPad own about 65-percent of the both industry’s profits), Google itself has not been able to diversify revenue streams, knowing that Google’s desktop and notebook search business is threatened by the move to mobile devices?
Here’s what has transpired over the past 10 years in the technology industry that Apple inhabits, and in some ways, dominates.
Apple’s switched the Mac to Intel CPUs. Today’s Macs are lighter, faster, more durable, have great resale value, and perform as well as any comparable PC for about the same price, and run more apps than any PC. OS X is a substantial differentiator and customers will pay more for the higher quality of the package and that gives Apple some tremendous margins which beget high profits.
Apple’s iPhone and iPad altered both the smartphone and tablet industry. It’s not déjà vu all again from the perspective of critics who belong to the Church of Marketshare. It is déjà vu all again from the perspective that Apple commands the premium end of all three markets– PCs, smartphones, tablets– and commands the most profits.
Apple became the most highly valued company in the world by creating better products, not by manufacturing the most products.
