Third party Menubar utilities are growing in number and some are indispensable, including a simple way to control iTunes. Think of the advantages. A controller in the Menubar is the cat’s meow for anyone who listens to iTunes while using a Mac. Here’s a better way.
Control With A Click
SmashTunes is easily my favorite Mac iTunes controller. It’s missing only one feature which I’ll reveal in a moment.
One click to the Mac’s Menubar gives you quick access to any iTunes playlist, song ratings, and much more. One click.
Also included are options to Pause, skip to the Next song (or Previous song), Playback and album or artist, display album artwork, and shuffle.
SmashTunes’ preferences give you options to change the media keyboard shortcuts, and setup shortcuts to display album artwork, Play or Pause, Next or Previous, Shuffle, Repeat, or rate songs– all from the keyboard.
You also get an option to change how the drop down menu in Menubar displays the options.
One more thing. SmashTunes also works with your Spotify account, including an option to use the Mac’s media keys on the keyboard in Spotify mode.
No direct playlist selections except in iTunes, and there’s no Pandora support. Otherwise, a few dollars gets you a good Menubar utility to control iTunes.
