For months the rumor mill churned out both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens and Apple did not disappoint. But iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are not mere incremental versions of the iPhone. The Plus model comes with a huge screen and vastly improved battery life, one more thing, and something missing.
iPhone, Therefore iAm
Also as expected, Apple’s iPhone 6 line comes with a faster A8 processor, vastly improved graphics, more pixels on the larger screen, an improved camera and sensor, and similar prices to last year’s models (with carrier pricing), but with different storage options. Oddly, I cannot find a 32GB model.
Both iPhone 6 models still come in silver, gold, and black, and start with 16GB of storage and go up to 128GB. Screen resolution on the base iPhone 6 is 1,334 x 750 while iPhone 6 Plus is full HD at 1,920 x 1,080.
Undaunted by the camera megapixel wars, Apple’s iPhone 6 models still come with an e-megapizel camera with an f/2.2 aperture, but with a new sensor, faster autofocus, and digital image stabilization.
The iPhone 6 Plus carries an optical image stabilization and a new slow-motion model at 240 fps. The front facing camera has a rapid-fire burst mode for selfies, and a 2.1-megapixel sensor that captures almost double the light of the previous version.
Both iPhone 6 models have a new and faster LTE compatibility, including VoLTE (Voice over LTE), and integrated Wi-Fi calling that can transition between a cellphone connection and Wi-Fi. And, a first for Apple, NFC is integrated into the iPhone 6.
So, lots of incremental improvements in the iPhone line, especially in the camera, and plenty of new features in iOS 8 on the way. The new iPhones will be available for pre-order on September 12, and be available on September 19th.
What’s missing? Where are the sapphire screens? No 32GB model? And the name iPhone 6 Plus is lame. Any product with ‘Plus’ in the name is lame. iPhone Air has a much better ring to it, but that would make the 4.7-inch iPhone actually lighter than air. I like that.
