It’s not exactly difficult to see why Steve Jobs hated Android smartphones. Whatever else you may think about Google and Android, it’s obvious that Android’s current design was stolen from Apple’s iPhone.
That puts Apple’s iconic iPhone at the heart of every Android device. What did Android or other smartphones look like before the iPhone came along? What do smartphones look like today? iPhones. How can Apple possible differentiate itself from all the copycat devices spawned by Android?
Heart And Soul
Let me be perfectly clear about my perspective regarding Apple’s iPhone vs. Android smartphones. One is an original, highly differentiated from previous smartphones. One is a copycat, differentiated by a laundry list of features bolted on to each device.
Apple clearly differentiates the iPhone in ways that Google, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and whatever other manufacturers are left holding the skinniest of profits cannot.
It isn’t just a list of extras. It’s how all the basic features work together so the end result of the product is a total that is greater than the sum of the parts. Apple works on a total experience, while others work on parts.
As an example, name an Android-based phone with a camera better than Apple’s iPhone 6. Name an Android smartphone with a better fingerprint identification sensor. Name an Android device with a more secure and easier to use mobile payment system. Name an Android iPhone wannabe that can be updated to the latest operating system version the way iPhone customers can. iPhone users tend to have their software updated and upgraded much feaster than the unwashed masses of Android device users.
Get the idea here? There’s more.
HTC gets high marks for smartphone hardware that resembles Apple’s iPhone build quality. But HTC stands alone. Apple differentiates the iPhone by hardware design and operating system. Even high quality hardware devices running Android are associated with cheaper plastic models running Android.
Got a problem with an iPhone that needs to be looked at? Apple claims an Apple Store is within driving distance of about 90-percent of all customers in the U.S. When a Windows phone breaks, where do you go? When a Samsung phone breaks, where do you go? Apple Store service sets the company apart from purveyors of plastic riffraff.
Because Google’s Android engineers stole the look and feel and design from Apple’s iPhone, every Android device has Apple at its heart, but not Apple’s soul. A stolen clone does not a soulful device make.
