Despite the mashup known as Apple Music and absolutely nothing about Apple TV, Mac users have much to look forward to in OS X 10.11 El Capitan which promises a few more features, and plenty of performance improvements. Here’s what I found missing from the keynote show but visible in the developer’s preview.
Oh, El Capitan, My Capitan
First up, OS X El Capitan gets a new system font. It’s called San Francisco and looks much like Helvetica Neue on a diet; slightly taller looking and more slender. A font that looks much like OS chief Craig Federighi.
Disk Utility gets a makeover, as does the venerable OX X color crayon picker (thank you). The spotlight window is now resizable, and the Mac’s Menubar, for now at least, has an autohide feature which works much like the Dock’s autohide.
This generation of Apple executives seems more prone to listen to developers and users than in the past (which it’s likely that many such new features were shot down by Steve Jobs). Safari’s Reader feature has font options. There are more dictionary languages available, plus extensions to edit photos in Photos.
Although mentioned briefly as part of iOS for incoming calls, OS X can also suggest contacts from Contacts, does a better, more comprehensive AutoFill, features extensions to share links, and even create a reminder with a click.
The file path can now be copied in Finder, Safari’s top hit will show up in Spotlight, and one of the many new data detectors understand airline flights. One feature I like that was demonstrated all too briefly during the keynote is the option to pin websites into a Safari bar so you’re one click away from viewing webmail, Twitter, Facebook, or news sites– without cluttering up Safari with multiple tabs. I think of the pinned sites a tiny tabs.
For now, I’m still digging through details on Swift 2.0, and bouncing between conference sessions while downing too much expensive liquid from Starbucks and trying to stay awake. I haven’t had time to test OS X El Capitan on my MacBook Pro to see how much of a performance increase Metal can really make.
