Here we are halfway through 2015 and it seems as if there are more social networks and photo upload locations on planet Earth than ever before.
Facebook, Flickr, SmugMug led the way with options to upload photos and share and store them online, but the number of places to share photos in recent years has soared. What I would like is a Mac app (and a matching app for iPhone and iPad) that shares everywhere. This one is close. As in hand grenades and horseshoes.
One App, Multiple Places
In a nutshell, that’s the requirement and that’s exactly what Poster tries to do. It’s a Mac app which lets you post videos and photos online; Facebook, Flickr, SmugMug. And that’s it.
The disappointment isn’t in what Poster does. It’s in what Poster could do. If all you post photos and videos to is Facebook, or SmugMug, or Flickr, you’re good to go and this is a worthy utility.
Poster takes a slightly different approach to each upload service, adjusting as needed because the features for each remain much different. Here’s an example. On Facebook, Poster will post to a profile, but any other pages you administer. Hello? That’s great for marketing people who manage multiple Facebook accounts.
Despite focusing on three major online photo services, Poster is not difficult to master, even though the interface varies a bit between Facebook, SmugMug, and Flickr.
The Flickr option gives you tools to post both videos and photos, setup tags, create sets and groups, and even moderate your account.
The SmugMug module is a bit different. I lets you create new galleries, create protected galleries, but the uploading process is drop dead simple.
If you’re a Mac user who uploads photos and videos to Flickr, Facebook, and SmugMug, Poster is just about the perfect way to make the whole process easier, faster, simpler. It’s one app with three personalities. If you upload only to a single online photo service, the value drops a bit, but the Facebook module is worthy on its own.
Poster is one of those rare Mac apps you love right away, and want it to do more than it does. A single app that does everything. The time has come. I can come up with a few dozen other places I’d like to upload photos, either for storage, or web viewing. But as it stands, Poster could be just what you need to manage a growing headache.
