Through the years the Finder has become hated and vilified but remains the de facto method to, well, find files, navigate your Mac’s folder structure, and even serve as an all around, jack-of-all-trades launcher. Can the Mac’s Finder be replaced with something better?
Find Super Powers
We at Mac360 have written extensively about the Finder’s problems, and even reviewed a number of Finder add-on tools. We’ve recommended a utility to use– Path Finder— if you want a Finder experience that borders on super powers.
Alas, not every Mac user needs all the powers of the Justice League of America rolled into a single Finder replacement tool with a hefty price tag. Between the Avengers-like Path Finder and the Finder itself, is a less expensive but highly utilitarian app you might like instead of the Finder. It’s called DCommander, and it looks familiar and different at the same time.
What DCommander does is simple. It gives you the familiarity and tools of the Finder itself, and a bunch of power user functions you crave. The obvious Finder items are there, including fullscreen, drag and drop, network drive mounts, sorting options, shortcuts, Quick Look, and file search.
After that, DCommander gives you options to sort different, including folders first, then files. It can compress and uncompress zip files, synchronize folders, present files in a dual pane mode, and even open FTP or SCP connections for easy file transfers.
The built-in shortcuts get you Terminal, Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, and Console with a click. Everything is customizable, too. Fonts and color schemes. View hidden files and folders with a click. Not only can file folders be synchronized, they can also be compared for content.
If you think the Finder is a bit anemic and something of a forgotten stepchild among the Mac’s built-in apps, then DCommander could be a boost to your productivity. The latest version comes with a much-needed trial try-before-you-buy option. While it’s not as feature laden as Path Finder, it’s not as complex to use, either, and it’s about half the price.
