The Mac geek in me demands that I collect calculators on my Mac. The best I’ve used is PCalc but it’s one of many to find permanent residence on my Mac. Here’s another and it’s not like any Mac calculator you’ve ever used.
Soulver is an unusual calculator which blends a bit of yesteryear– when we did math on a manual calculator and transferred results to a yellow notepad. Think paper, pencil, manual calculator with real buttons, but a true blue member of the digital world where everything is stored and available with a click.
Solve It This Way
Modern digital calculators on the Mac tend to emulate plastic calculators from a few decades ago. Keypad, screen, formulas, special keys, etc.
Soulver is a hybrid calculator for the Mac. No paper required. It’s all digital, all on your screen, all calculations are always visible (like a paper trail but on the Mac’s screen).
The difference between Soulver and other Mac calculators is how you enter numbers and make calculations. There’s no keypad in the traditional sense, which makes Soulver operate like a notepad.
Instead, type out your calculation the way you’d write it out on a piece of paper. You won’t need to remember formulas or which key to hit or when. Simply adding and subtracting or dividing or multiplying numbers is easy by adding the proper sign. Here’s what Soulver looks like on the Mac.
It’s like having a mini-spreadsheet but without the cells and no need to create cells or enter specific formulas.
Don’t think of Soulver as being simplistic because it mixes words and numbers and calculations together. Percentages are a snap. Conversions and units cannot be easier. All the standard math functions are built-in, including the option for huge long numbers.
It even does currencies, variables, stocks, and comes with a bunch of useful export options.
Guess what? There’s a version of Soulver for iPhone which can sync up your calculations from the Mac by using iCloud or Dropbox. The iOS version features a keypad, though, but has similar capabilities.
The iOS version appears more traditional as calculators go, but hundreds of four and five star reviews make it worthy.
Soulver is a classy app and a great addition to your calculator collection. The iOS version for iPhone and iPad is priced right on my threshold of throwaway money, but the Mac version has a trial try-before-you-buy version.
