Mac users, especially those who frequent the Mac App Store, have been treated to a few dozen new word processor-like writing apps in recent years; minimalist writing tools that often do exactly what the built-in TextEdit does on a Mac and little more. For a price.
Writing Should Be Free!
Here’s the perfect example. Simple Writer is, well, for lack of a better term, a simple writing app, almost minimalist so it’s free, but with a nominal price tag for a few more features you might want.
Simple Writer is much like a few dozen other inexpensive Mac writer’s tools; limited feature set, easy to setup, intuitive toolbar, simple to use for basic writing and notes, but nothing like what you’d expect a novelist or professional writer to use.
What I like about Simple Writer is the familiar toolbar at the top, though using a floppy disk as the Save icon is somewhat archaic. When was the last time you used a floppy disk?
The tools are standard and self explanatory. Simple Writer also does moveable tabs, and lets you drop in images and shapes with text wrap around. All the basic formatting tools are built-in, including auto layout, font styles and colors, alignment, and more.
Documents can be exported as PDF files, and everything you create can be saved in iCloud Drive and shared online or with other Macs or with iPhone and iPad. Yes, there’s an iOS version of Simple Writer, so you can take your notes or projects on the road, and it works much the same way.
There’s not much to Simple Writer, but it might just be enough. I would like to see word and character count but considering the price and the simplicity– it’s better than TextEdit– it might be all you need.
