If ever there was a modern technology we love to hate it’s email. Regardless of your persuasion in life, Mac or Windows, iPhone or Android, or anything in between, most of us can agree that email is a necessary evil.
Email is so bad that we have orphan email that resides on the mail server, seemingly forever, and often without our knowledge; until one day we setup a new email application and all those ancient messages come back to haunt us and fill the inbox with ever more clutter. Is there a way to fix that?
My day job working as a system administrator and troubleshooter for a large private school near Chicago comes with the necessary responsibility to help those in trouble; including staff, teachers, and students who have filled their email storage to overflowing and need someone to flush the digital pipes.
One such utility is called MyPopBarrier, a donationware Mac app which you can use for free to clean up lost messages from your email account. Basically, you setup MyPopBarrier just like an email app, then it logs into your email account and displays what’s there so you can elect to store or clean the mess.
MyPopBarrier takes your email account username login ID and password and account server information, logs in appropriately, then displays what still remains on the email server.
Therein lies the value. And the fun. Even if you use IMAP to view messages and keep them on the email server, all kinds of things happen to swell the account with messages you thought were delete but were not, or messages you forgot but still remain.
On the surface, MyPopBarrier looks much like any basic, no-frills email application. It’s not.
You won’t be able to create an email message in MyPopBarrier and there’s no reply or forward option. In fact, options are thin and low in number. You can purge messages from the server, change the state of a message (ostensibly so it will show up again in your daily email app), and that’s about it. Just remember to view the Red dot, the Gray dot, and the Green dot. Change a message to Red to delete it. Everything else stays.
MyPopBarrier is an easy and inexpensive email utility that serves a single purpose. To let you view what remains on your email account on the mail server.
Simple. Sweet. Priced right. It’s not the kind of utility you’ll use often, but if you have multiple email accounts and you’ve used them for a few years, you may be surprised to find how much email remains on the server long after you thought them deleted and gone.
