The problem with using Gmail on the Mac in Mail is that all of Gmail’s features are not available, and Google does not have an official Gmail for Mac app. Enter Kiwi for Gmail, a very nicely done, Mac-like email app for Gmail, with all the Gmail features you can eat.
Gmail on the Mac has been limited to Gmail in a browser window, or one of a half dozen Gmail utilities that let you check Gmail, read and send messages, but do not take advantage of all the features Google stuffs into the free email service.
Kiwi for Gmail is like having a full-featured email applications that only does Gmail, but does all of Gmail. Take a look.
After trying Kiwi for a week I want the same app developers to turn their attention to a competitor to Apple’s Mail app. Kiwi is that good.
Here’s my short list of what I love:
- Use multiple Gmail accounts
- Access to Google Drive
- Access to Google Calendar
- Access to Google Hangouts
- Global keyboard shortcuts from any app
- Automatic fill-in of email addresses
You get the idea, right? Even the dropdown Menubar menu displays totals of new email messages in each of multiple Gmail accounts. A single click opens a message (no need to switch to the Inbox).
I’ve used almost every email app you can find for the Mac, and I try to keep company email messages separate from personal email (Hillary, I feel your pain; been there, done that) but Kiwi is the first that brings all of the Google community of utilities into email. It’s like a Google center that revolves around email.
Mac notebook users will appreciate the built-trackpad features. Gestures just work to go forward and backward. The keyboard shortcuts work within other applications. The email Compose window is clean and spacious and uncluttered. The color scheme ribbon matches each of the built-in add-ons. Calendar, Hangouts, Drive, etc. (finally, those Google colors make sense).
While Kiwi does not have a distraction free mode, it does have A Zen Switch which hides email counts, badges, and notifications so you can focus on something else and not have Google bother you.
For any Mac user who uses Gmail a lot, or wants to segregate personal email from business email, Kiwi will surprise and delight. There’s a lite version to try, but the most valuable features are in the full version. The only real negative is a biggie for some of us, but less and less of a problem these days: Kiwi for Gmail is only online– there is no offline support so you need to have an internet connection to use all of Google’s features.
If only these developers would build a general email app for the Mac.
