Late last year I did a search and entered the search keyword “productivity.” Yes, I know there’s an app category called Productivity, but the search results from keywords are different from the actual categories.
What I found was a clever and delightfully useful Mac utility which makes your Mac make noise. Alright, like beauty, noise is in the eye of the beholder. But this kind of so-called noise is the kind that makes your workday go better, Mac or iPhone.
Noizio Isn’t Noise
Finding a background white noise generator app for the Mac is easy enough, and Noizio fits into a similar but slightly different category. I don’t like to think of it as a noise generator. Noizio is more of a background sound generator which gives you controls to mix and match 10 ambient sounds, each with it’s own audio volume control.
That means you can blend the ambient sounds into a mixture that’s suitable for your Mac workflow (or, relax flow, if there is such a thing), or use it with your iPhone to provide a more aurally soothing environment. Click the Mac’s Menubar and this is what you get.
Noise sound controls.
Noizio is pure Mac and looks much like a brand new OS X app (like something Apple would build). Sounds play in an endless, seamless loop (at least, I haven’t been able to find an audio seam).
Controls to manage the sounds, mix of sounds, and audio volume are simple and obvious. Click the Menubar icon, select the sound or sounds you want to play in the background, then select the volume slider bar to adjust and mix the sound of each.
That’s control with a purpose, and you can choose from a variety of pleasant and interesting background sounds.
Noizio varies from other Mac background white noise apps with simple controls, including an option to auto-pause the sound at a specific time (your neighbors or cubicle mates might appreciate that).
You can also select sound output to Mac, Apple TV, or speakers. Sounds? Did I forget the list of sounds? Mix and match October Rain, Coffee House, Thunderstorm, Campfire, Winter Wind, Sea Waves, River Stream, Summer Night, Sunny Day, Deep Space, Sailing Yacht, Inside Train, Farm, Wind Chimes, and Blue Whales until the cows come home.
The iPhone version is half the price of the Mac version, but only a few dollars.
Controls look and work much the same as the Mac version, and the iPhone version also works on the iPad. This one is highly recommended and comes with hundreds of five star reviews.
