We all know of noise we’d rather not hear, an unwanted acoustic phenomenon; whether it’s from the neighbors, at work, or a spouse driving the car from the back seat. At the other end of the scale is noise that’s actually good for us. And you can get it on your Mac.
Noise For Health
We’ve all heard of white noise, often referred to as the background noise in a work environment, but there’s much more to it. White noise can be good or bad. In this case, the Mac app White Noise is good, beneficial to us and for a variety of reasons. What this White Noise white noise does is create an ambient sound environment to help you relax, reduce stress, even sleep better.
Have you ever noticed that when you travel and sleep overnight you often hear sounds you don’t hear in your bed at home? White Noise is a way to take a comforting background sound environment wherever you go.
What you get is background sounds– I don’t like to call them noise– that are familiar yet blended to create a wall of sounds that are soothing and comforting. The Mac version uses a familiar CoverFlow interface to flip through the list of sounds.
The Mac version comes with a Mix Pad sound designer component which can used to match background sounds with your home environment.
This is all well and good and there are dozens of ambient sounds to sooth a savage breast– crowds, rain, showers, washer and dryer, wind, beach, cars, city noise, and much more– but the features don’t stop there.
White Noise makes a great digital clock with multiple colors and brightness options, and sound timers which fade audio in and out without jarring your ears. You can create your own playlists of background sounds, each with different durations. The app is compatible with sounds from the White Noise Market. Yep. There is such a place online.
A little noise is good for the soul, but better if you can control all the sounds that makeup the white noise you need, and you can take it wherever you go.
For example, there’s White Noise Baby which helps infants to stop being fussy and become calm; including an interactive high contrast baby rattle and a monitor. This version comes with 200 looped ambient sounds, 10 classical music tracks, background audio support, a shutoff timer, and will reactive if the baby’s crying is detected. How cool is that?
Now, if there was just some white noise to help calm easily distracted teenagers.
