Way back in the day, more than a decade ago, Mac360 came on the scene to find and promote useful Mac utilities, and share an opinion or two. Or, three. From 2004 to 2017 were still here, still doing what we do. Here’s another free Mac utility you may never have heard about, but should because it’s useful.
If there is one thing we Mac users need badly in macOS Sierra these days it’s a way to manage all the utilities in the Mac’s Menubar. For utilities collectors like me, the Menubar is a handy place to store select utilities and apps without cluttering up the Dock (which gets smaller and more unwieldy as it grows). Many of the best add-on utilities for the Mac are Menubar only and it gets crowded up there. Here’s a perfect example of why.
The Desktop Utility
Easily the most obviously named Mac Desktop utility is DesktopUtility. This useful tool is a free Menubar app that gives quick access to a number of Mac functions which are not quite so easy to get. Useful? Some of the functions on the list are a bit esoteric, but it’s likely that every Mac user has had a need for one or more at some time or another.
For example, DesktopUtility gives you an option to Toggle the Desktop. What does that mean? It’s a one click way to make whatever is on the Desktop disappear momentarily. It hides the Desktop and the menu selection is an on-off toggle. Think security through obscurity. Likewise, DesktopUtility can make invisible files visible (and then toggle back to invisibility) with a click. All from the Mac’s Menubar.
That pesky and hidden User Library folder? Hidden no more. One click makes it visible. One click makes it hidden again.
Yes. Of course. There’s more.
There are times when the Finder, Dock, or Menubar may need to be restarted. DesktopUtility has a menu selection for each. Finally, if you get items stuck in the Trash can that cannot be deleted, OS X has a way for force the Trash to empty, and that’s also a menu selection in DesktopUtility.
Even better, the app provides shortcuts– global hotkeys– for each of the menu selections so your hand never needs to leave the keyboard.
DesktopUtility is a very useful Desktop utility and it’s free. It’s also a companion app to one of our favorite security apps, Cookie. Now, what can you do about that cluttered Menubar already packed with useful utilities we’ve recommended through the years?
