Free is good but also features shortcomings. What are those keystroke combinations built into macOS Sierra? I can never remember. The Grab app in the Utilities folder is good but only grabs what it wants to grab and isn’t exactly precise (you can’t move the grab box around or resize it first). Is there a better way? Yes.
My wife is a teacher and she takes plenty of screenshots on her Mac to use in classes at school, so I’m certain she’s tried most of the screen grab, screen shot, and screen capture tools you can find for the Mac. Here’s one I found all by my lonesome in a weak moment of need. It’s called Precise Screenshot.
What it does differently than Apple’s built-in Grab tool, and different than most simple screen capture apps, is in the precision of the capture; hence the name, Precision Screenshot.
Use it to grab a specific and resizable portion of the screen, or select a pre-fixed grab size from the customizable topdown menu in the Menubar. Of course, it does full screen captures, too.
You determine the size you need and it becomes a preset with each new screen capture. Using Apple’s built-in keyboard shortcuts to capture a position on the screen is good if you can remember the shortcuts and you don’t mind just having pixel coordinates instead of size or location.
Precise Screenshot is high visual; what you see will be captured as is, moved in any direction by a pixel if you need. There’s also a built in timer (up to 10 seconds) and the red frame displays the screen capture size (which usually is more important than the pixel coordinates).
Use the app to save the screenshot as a clipboard item or select it to save the file somewhere on your Mac. It can also save the screenshot in multiple graphic image formats from JPG to PNG to TIFF, with or without the alpha transparency.
Considering the price tag, the feature list is rather long. For example, you get a preview of the last screenshot. Audio feedback has selectable sounds. The timer also has visual feedback. The frame always displays the size of the screenshot, preset or custom. And, get this; Precise Screenshot lets you controls the name automatically assigned to each screenshot.
No, this isn’t a screen capture utility like my favorite, iShowU Instant which does fantastic video screenshots, but it’s hard to beat the price and the precision of such a simple utility.
