You know what surprises me? It’s the number of Mac users who watch Netflix. And YouTube. And iTunes movies. I mean, hello? iPad? Yeah, I know. We dance with the gadget that brung us to the party, and sometimes that’s a Mac.
My husband and I work in a large Chicagoland private school populated by many hundreds of Macs, Windows PCs, some Chromebooks, and iPads. The problem I see here and there is repeated with every generation of teachers and students. Macs go to sleep at the most inopportune time. There’s an app for that.
Stay Awake For Free
The Mac user base has tripled in the past decade or two and that means more app developers which means more apps which also means fewer free applications. It’s Friday, something should be free, amirite? Here it is. Owly.
All Owly does is stick around in the Mac’s Menubar and when you want your Mac to stay awake while binge watching something on Netflix or iTunes or Amazon, click and ye shall receive uninterrupted viewing bliss. Owly helps to keep the Mac’s screen in an always on state; no dim, no screen saver, no sleep mode.
That’s about it. Owly keeps your Mac’s screen from going to sleep, keeps the Mac from going to sleep, and makes sure everything keeps running while you binge watch YouTube or Netflix or whatever else suits your fancy pants.
Owly has a few preferences but nothing that can’t be figured out within a minute.
Set up a keyboard shortcut– a hot keystroke combo– to invoke Owly from the Menubar. Set Owly to startup when you log into your Mac. There’s even an option to show the Owly icon in the Dock (because too many of us already have too many utilities stuffed into an overstuffed Menubar).
If you need instructions, click. If you want to see the cool countdown before Owly does its thing, click. There’s even an option to set Owly to work for Eternity (not really an eternity; but that might depend upon what you’re binge watching), otherwise, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, or one hour to eight hours.
What’s not to like? Owly is free. Everyone deserves a Friday Freebie, right?
