Which of Apple’s iPhone line do you plan to buy in the next year? The 2017 lineup is the largest ever and stretches from the entry-level 4-inch iPhone SE for $349 all the way to an iPhone X with 256GB of storage for $1,149. In between is a mixture of old, old, new, and future.
Yes, Apple still sells the two-year-old iPhone 6s and 6s Plus as new, last year’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as new, plus the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus– which are new– and the iPhone X, except you can’t even order it yet, and it’s not available for viewing in the Apple Stores. This lineup is a dilemma.
All of Apple’s iPhone line run the latest and greatest iOS 11 so basic functionality is the same across the board. Apps, camera, Touch ID (with the exception of iPhone X which uses Face ID), etc. If you’ve been reading Mac360 for any length of time then you know where we’re going.
iPhone 8 now? Or, iPhone X later?
That’s a dilemma. At the moment I use an iPhone 7 Plus on the iPhone Upgrade Program which means I am eligible for a new iPhone now. Except the iPhone I want isn’t available now and cannot even be ordered until late next month, and if reports are anywhere near accurate, may not be available to ship until December or early 2018.
Should I just bite the bullet and upgrade to iPhone 8 Plus, or be a holdout who may get stuck waiting for iPhone X for four to six months. If I choose the former, a new iPhone awaits me within a week. If I choose the latter, I’ll wait now and wait later.
Your mileage may vary, but I just checked the Apple Store and new iPhone 8 models ship in 3-5 business days. That means demand may not be great for the iPhone 8 models. That could also mean Apple has done a better job managing supply and had plenty of iPhone 8 models on hand for the launch. Regardless, an iPhone 8 is just days away if I choose that option.
iPhone X is a different animal entirely. In size, it’s smaller than the larger iPhone 8 Plus, but has a larger screen. It also has an HDR display, a micro-bezel case, an improved camera, and the much talked about Face ID security system. But it cannot be ordered until after midnight on October 27 with expected shipping in early November. If demand is high and supply is low, that shipping date could end up in December or early 2018.
See? There is a problem with the new iPhones. Instant gratification vs. delayed gratification. Which should I choose? What would you do?
