With apologies to René Descartes and cogito ergo sum in latin, iTeach, therefore, iAm. Or, so I think, therefore, I am. Teaching has certain rewards, among them helping children to become young adults with skills and experiences that help guide them through life.
Teaching also means trying out different apps that can benefit students and teachers. Here’s one that works well for students– Mac, iPhone, iPad, and even Watch– and it’s free to try. It’s called iHomework, an organizer app that helps students learn to set and accomplish specific goals, and makes for a good back-to-school gift.
Learn. Think. Do.
At the very basic level, iHomework is an organizer that students use to plan, organize, and schedule their school activities, classes, and events. It lets students track school work; assignments, courses, teachers, and anything else, within a familiar calendar-like environment that is customized for students and schoolwork.
Here’s a look at the iPad version.
Everything can be tagged, searched, organized, and categorized to match the school’s curriculum and the student’s needs. The built-in Planner view makes it easy to setup new items and events, and view exactly what is due next and when.
The iPhone version works much the same as the iPad version, but with a smaller screen. iHomework syncs scheduled data between devices, too, so wherever you are with an Apple device, your schedule, assignments, and homework are nearby.
The value with iHomework is obvious. Organization. Students that plan their work, and then work their plan perform better in school, and do better as adults than those who do not have a good routine.
The built-in tagging system makes it easy to add tags to assignments, events, schedules, or any other entry, and find it with a search. You’ll need an iHomework Account for the sync to work between devices. There’s also an optional annual subscription which unlocks a number of additional features, but iHomework can be used standalone and free.
For Mac users on iHomework, changing event or schedule dates is as easy as drag and drop.
Possibly the most useful functionality in iHomework is the Planner– to setup and organize assignments, including homework, research, and projects– but the alarm so students will know a deadline is approaching. iHomework’s built-in Organizer also lets students jump to a course website or contact an instructor by call or email.
And, yes, the iOS version comes with a Watch app which makes it easier for affluent students to keep track of upcoming assignments and schedule items. The premium version has additional features and multiple subscription plans. There is much to like in iHomework and the entry-level price of free makes it much easier to get more students on the road to personal organization and objective setting.
