There is much going on under the hood of your Mac. At least, behind the screen. And on the screen. Did you know you can make movies from what is displayed on the Mac’s screen?
It’s called screen capture and QuickTime Player does it for free but that’s about all. You get a movie of whatever you’re doing on the Mac’s screen. What if you want to edit that screen movie? Or, drop in text or overlay other video clips? Or, add some audio. You know, like iMovie but easier and better? That’s iShowU Studio.
Camera & Screen
Where I work during the day, while not fighting off Apple’s critics at night, we make videos; the quick and dirty kind that need to come together fast, look good, and remain easily editable. That’s exactly what we get from iShowU Studio. It’s like iMovie for screen videos but actually easier to use.
Look familiar?
It’s like iMovie from yesteryear, complete with the more industry standard video timeline. iShowU Studio captures whatever is on your Mac’s screen as a movie. Then you can edit and drop in whatever you need to create a screencast for instructional videos, how-to videos, education, etc.
iShowU Studio grabs the Mac’s screen as a movie but can also grab video from the Mac’s built-in FaceTime camera (or almost any camera you can plug into a Mac). Editing tools are typical for the genre and include shapes, transitions, and options to pan and zoom anywhere on the video.
The whole capture and edit process couldn’t be much easier.
Click to record as a video anything you’re doing on the Mac’s screen. iShowU Studio grabs the mouse clicks, captures the FaceTime video in real time, audio, too. Stop and start again as you need because the editing process gets rid of unwanted video segments with ease and lets you blend in zoomed shots, add transitions between clips, and when you’re done, send the finished product to YouTube, Vimeo, or wherever.
iShowU Studio is smart enough to capture screen videos from iPhone or iPad. Just connect either one with a Lightning cable, click the setting to capture, and you can narrate whatever is displayed on the iPhone or iPad screen. It’s like having a little screen capture video studio in your Mac. You can even drop in other video clips to the timeline and edit accordingly.
By way of comparison, our company has and uses a number of Mac screen capture and edit utilities, including the feature packed Camtasia, the highly acclaimed ScreenFlow, and a few others. Most of us use iShowU Studio because it has less feature clutter and is easier to get a capture and get into edit mode; especially beneficial for those who do not live, eat, sleep, and breathe video editing.
Issues? Not much. The learning curve is soft and you get your first video production in minutes. Just remember that video editing requires a degree of effort, more so if you’re not doing it every day. Nicely done. Priced about right (less than Camtasia or ScreenFlow).
