I subscribe to the out of sight, out of mind security theory. If you can’t see it, you probably won’t go looking for it. Hides is a Mac utility that hides files. Out of sight. The Invisible utility keeps files even more out of sight.
Hidden Is Good
First up is Hides. If you’re one of those Mac users who treats the Mac’s screen and Desktop as your own desktop and it’s cluttered with open files and apps, then you’ll like this solution. Hides is about as fast at cleaning up a cluttered screen as anything short of a genie in a bottle (and you wouldn’t waste one of three wishes just to get the Mac’s all tidy, would you?).
Mac users tend to fall into two groups. Those who use the screen and Desktop as a big, well, place where everything you’re doing is visible to the naked eyes. That’s clutter. With a click Hides gives you Focus Mode. All apps on the Mac will be hidden except the one you’re using upfront. Think distraction free. All with a keyboard combo or a click to the Mac’s Menubar.
Now you’re ready to focus on the app in front of you and not be bothered by a cluttered Mac screen full of apps or a cluttered Desktop.
Second on my list is a companion app called Invisible. Instead of hiding app windows to give you a more clutter free Mac experience, Invisible lets you hide files in a hurry to keep them away from prying eyes.
Drag and drop puts files from the Desktop into an invisible location, out of sight, out of mind– but visible again with just a click. You can even password protect Invisible files.
What good are files you can’t see?
Invisible hides files so the Desktop is clear. That’s good for presentations which look better when all the Desktop clutter is removed. It’s also a quick way to hide personal files without having to lock them away. And it keeps files where they are– just invisible– so they’re easily found if you need them.
Security isn’t the issue here. It’s all about convenience. If you want to secure specific files I recommend Encrypto. It’s Mac and Windows, highly secure, and convenient– but it’s not just an easy way to hide files or clean the Mac’s cluttered screen and desktop.
Caveats to Hides or Invisible? None. They work well, they’re simple to use, and you can try before you buy from the developer’s website (but you’ll have to hunt for the link).
