Apple’s annual iPhone event started with Apple Watch Series 4. Apple is just showing off. Sure, you can buy a FitBit watch for less, but Apple Watch is #1. In smartwatches. In watches. Series 4 is one of those breakthrough designs that cause lust and drooling in gadget hounds.
Earlier this week I read Ron McElfresh’s consideration of 3 Killer Features In Apple Watch. He nailed it. Feature #1 is heart rate monitor. Sure, GPS and LTE are important. Yes, all those extra censors and exercise features are worthwhile. Yes, the Watch band design is classic. But the first killer feature the heart rate monitor.
#2 on the list is electrocardiogram capability and Apple delivered that in Watch 4. Nailed it, indeed. On the back of the Watch case is one part of the contacts necessary to capture an ECG/EKG. The other is in the redesigned Digital Crown. Open the heart rate app, touch the Crown and Watch begins the electrocardiogram.
How cool is that?
McElfresh expects the Holy Grail to show up in a year or two in killer feature #3, a built-in blood glucose monitor.
How cool will that be?
OK, back to reality. Apple is just showing off what it can do and competitors cannot with Watch Series 4. The display is larger. So are the cases at 40 mm and 44 mm respectively. Watch 4 comes with new Haptic Feedback, a better microphone and speakers that are 50-percent louder.
It also comes with a new 64-bit S4 chip that doubles Watch’s speed, plus a new accelerometer and gyroscope. You know what that means? It can detect falls and send alerts after one minute. Automatically. The built-in sensors now detect irregular heartbeats; think atrial fibrillation– with alerts.
Apple is showing off and embarrassing smartwatch competitors. New Watch with GPS and a silver aluminum case rolls in at $399 with enough options and variances to add 50-percent to the devices average selling price.
Beyond ECG/EKG capability my favorite new feature are the expanded Watch faces, including more complications; with one that has eight built-in complications. That is content density. Compare any other smartwatch with Watch Series 4 and you see the difference between Apple’s famous attention to detail and cheaper knockoffs.
What? You don’t trust my time honored experience to render an accurate judgment? See the Apple Special Event video yourself to see the features in action. It starts with Watch then gets into the nitty gritty of new iPhones.
With Apple Watch Series 4 the company is just showing off.
