Name the most important technology in the 21st century. iPod? Nope. iPad? Uh uh. 4G LTE? Quickly forgotten once 5G hits the streets. I submit to you that iPhone is the greatest personal computer ever.
Fight me. We think of iPhone as a phone with applications, but compared to a traditional Mac or Windows PC, iPhone is a gargantuan beast of technology unlike any product made by humankind beyond clean water, electricity, or the wheel.
Top The List
Smartphones were around before 2007; before Steve Jobs stepped on stage to upstage the entire industry with a single new product that did more by doing less. Smartphones back then were not so smart. They were difficult to use, user unfriendly, cumbersome, and in need of a revolution. iPhone brought the revolution as the greatest PC ever.
Where does iPhone fit among technological achievements?
Greatest Inventions In The Past 1000 Years – During the technology feeding frenzy of the late 1990s many experts declared the Internet one of the most important inventions since the Industrial Revolution.
Robert J. Gordon:
Internet surfing may be fun, but it represents a far smaller increment in the standard of living than achieved by the extension of day into night achieved by electric light, the revolution in factory efficiency achieved by the electric motor, the flexibility and freedom achieved by the automobile, the saving of time and shrinking of the globe achieved by the airplane, the new materials achieved by the chemical industry, the first sense of live two-way communication achieved by the telephone, the arrival of live news and entertainment into the family parlor achieved by radio and then television, and the enormous improvements in life expectancy, health, and comfort achieved by urban sanitation and indoor plumbing.
Blah blah blah. iPhone is the greatest PC ever because it does more than any PC ever. #1 on the list above is the Printing Press, then Electric Light, Automobile, Telephone, Radio and TV. Computer comes in at #7.
iPhone is a computer. It is mobile, affordable, and brings together in a single and easy-to-use device almost everything mankind needs to get work done, to play and enjoy life, and to communicate with others nearly anywhere on planet earth.
Macs don’t do that. PCs don’t do that. iPhone does that.
The 50 Greatest Breakthroughs Since the Wheel – The Atlantic recently assembled a panel of 12 scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers, historians of technology, and others to assess the innovations that have done the most to shape the nature of modern life. The main rule for this exercise was that the innovations should have come after widespread use of the wheel began, perhaps 6,000 years ago.
The list is comprised of the same old tired comparisons of the past; technology that helped advance mankind’s status on planet earth, some of which combined to make the iPhone a personal device revolution.

- Optical Lenses

How many of those roots have helped iPhone– and the smartphone revolution– become the most advanced personal computer and personal device ever?
If I were forced to have a single Apple product I would choose iPhone. That says it all. Macs are good for heavy lifting; the trucks of the 21st century, but online transportation is the domain of the iPhone (smartphones).
iPhone is the greatest PC ever. Fight me.
