Apple is in on this game, too. Yes, Safari comes with options to install ad blockers and tracker blockers, but the Mac maker also takes money from Google to keep the search engine giant the default search engine on Safari. Is there a better way? Yes.
Ghost In The Browser
Staying off the grid while you’re online is no easy task and can get expensive what with an ongoing cost to subscribe to a virtual private network (VPN). Worse, many ad blockers and tracker blockers come with a price tag these days. It’s the nature of a capitalist society. Everyone is out to get your money.
What can you do?
First up, and assuming you’re not interested in shelling out cash just so Google can’t follow you online, we recommend a couple of good browsers that come with built-in controls to block ads and trackers. Firefox and Brave.
What if you just can’t bear to use Google as your default search engine? Yes, there’s DuckDuckGo, but results don’t seem to compete with Google. That leaves Microsoft Bing (also with ads and trackers) or Google with StartPage. Good results without the ads and tracking.
What if you absolutely positively must use Safari on your Mac? Enter the new free ad blocker and tracker solution from Ghostery; Ghostery Lite. It installs from the Mac App Store as a Safari extension.
Download to install the Ghostery extension. In Safari, open Preferences, click on Extensions, and click to activate Ghostery Lite.
That should be enough for most Safari users.
It protects your privacy online by stopping trackers from accessing your personal data and blocks ads to keep the websites you visit clutter free. It delivers the tracking protection our users have come to know and love but with minimizing the need for customization or maintenance.
If you need more granular controls, Ghostery Lite delivers those, too.
Ghostery Lite shows up in Safari’s toolbar. Click it and it reveals additional information in a pop down pane. You can whitelist specific websites, too. The extension blocks ads, site analytics, comments, social media, adult content and more. Free.
Of course, as you travel around Mac360 or any of the AppleVillagers’ websites you’ll notice that we have ads that do not track; no analytics, and not even a cookie. We’re basically as tracker free as you can get. That’s why our webpages load faster than most other websites which are cluttered with ad trackers and analytics scripts.
Indeed, less is more. Free is better.
