There’s not much to not like about Apple’s built-in QuickTime Player app. QuickTime is free. QuickTimes plays and converts a large number of different video and audio files. What’s not to like? I mentioned free, right?
Apple made QuickTime Player as a simple, standalone media player with very few extras. What if you want subtitles in a movie or video? What about playlists? Got FFMpeg support? How about something simple like adjusting playback speed? For all that and more you need this.
Media file formats run aplenty, Mac or Windows. Every now and then I run into a file format I’ve never heard of and QuickTime Player won’t make it play. Thankfully, the dark world of media file formats is inhabited by a group of dedicated users who see the need for variety.
Enter Movist, yet another Mac media player which looks and works a bit like QuickTime Player, only it does a few things QuickTime does not.
Visually, Movist looks like any ordinary media player for Mac users, but there are custom themes you can install to change the look and feel. Movist lets you create movie or clip playlists. Use your Apple Remote Control to control playback. The app can run in single window mode or open multiple videos. One option lets the movie run as the Desktop background.
One feature you won’t find on QuickTime Player is subtitles. This alone is worth the few dollars in Movist’s rather nominal price tag (you’ll spend more at Starbucks).
Movist is loaded with features not found in many other media players, though some require specific Mac models with certain graphic cards, so caveat emptor. It supports a number of Core Image filters, flips and rotates videos, and has an option to sync with audio visual equipment.
If you want to do subtitles on a movie, Movist is the place to start. Subtitles are pre-rendered so you see where on the video the text will be saved, and the player even autodetects subtitles in movie clips.
For all the extra goodies in Movist that you won’t find in QuickTime Player you will find the app to be an acquired tastes, especially because of the many extras. Not bad for a few bucks.
