Free apps for the Mac are becoming a rare breed– fewer to find and farther between these days. Here’s one you might like. It’s free. It’s useful. It’s called Funter.
This cleverly designed and useful Mac app does what the Mac’s Finder does not. It gives you an option to view hidden files from within the Finder, hide other files, copy files or remove files. Not bad for free, right?
Out Of Sight
There is a good reason why Apple hides various folders and specific files in macOS. It wouldn’t take much for an inexperienced Mac user or some nefarious software to find and delete– accidentally or on purpose– the Mac’s treasured system files. Out of sight, out of mind is a security mechanism that works.
What if you know what you’re doing and you want to 1) hide some files and folders, or, 2) want to view some hidden files or folders, and, 3) want to do exactly that in the Finder?
You can’t. With Funter you can.
Click on the Funter icon in the Mac’s Menubar, and the utility toggles between visible and invisible files and folders. That makes Funter a great utility which makes visible that which is already hidden by Apple. And it makes it easy to hide files out of view.
For a free utility that seems basic, Funter has a lengthy list of useful features.
- Switch hidden files visibility
- Access from system menu bar
- Finder “remembers” the state after relaunch
- The fastest way to show hidden files
- Choose any disk or folder for search
- Show all/hidden/unhidden files in results
- Search files in bundles and packages
- Reveal files in Finder
- Built-in files preview
- Copy, move or delete files
What’s not to like?
Funter actually integrates within the Mac’s Finder and has a command within the Mac’s Finder context menu. Right click on a file or folder. In the menu you’ll see a Hide/Unhide option. That’s great for a single file or folder of files.
Funter also comes with a built-in search option so you can search hidden files in system folders and packages. Frankly, free Mac apps should be more in abundance. In the case of Funter, it’s a free utility that is useful and helps to highlight other apps by the same developer and it’s available free.
