What would make a technology or market pundit think the Age of the iPhone is over? Apple just finished up its second best financial quarter in history; such a disappointment that the entire stock market took a dive and prognosticator certificates went 10 for a dollar.
Just between you and me and the fencepost, I love reading what will happen and what has just happened in the Applesphere; especially from those who really don’t have a clue.
Apple Earnings Affirms the Age of the iPhone Is Over
Uh huh. That’s a wrap. Put your old iPhone on eBay and switch to Android because Apple lost and everyone else won.
Apple’s on the hunt for a new cash cow
Uh huh. It just started last month, too. Since iPhone and iPad launched, Apple has just sat around waiting for the entire world to ditch Android smartphones and tablets and make the switch. The recent sales shortfall indicated that wasn’t going to happen, so, what did CEO Tim Cook have to say?
iPhone is so over. Let’s go look for a new cash cow.
Apple Car? Nah. Apple Glasses? Maybe some day. But for now, let’s sublease some floor space inside those Apple stores because the nearly 1-billion iPhone customers know the iPhone era is over so they’ll be switching to something else. Soon. Really.
What is going on?
Economic headwinds aside, the smartphone that has defined Apple for so many years is no longer a growing market.
A secret that started four years ago and ended with Tim Cook’s announcement to investors on January second that the sky was falling. Well, the sky fell exactly the way Cook described, so the end is not only near, it’s here.
What about the future?
One possibility is wearables. SVP Luca Maestri said on the conference call that Apple’s wearables business is already “approaching the size of a Fortune 200 company.” The company reported a nearly 50 percent increase in sales for its wearables products, like the Apple Watch Series and AirPods.
Well, that sounds promising. Except for one thing. Both Watch and AirPods are iPhone accessories, and if the iPhone era has come to an end, then, why bother?
Yeah, I know. There was a sale on Snark at Costco.
Upcoming Apple products have been rumored to come with even more health features. Patents and reports about the upcoming AirPods 2 have already stated that the earbuds will come with biometric sensors and health applications.
Here’s the real deal for my Friday Freebie and it’s one you can bank on. The iPhone Era is not over. Apple has nearly a billion iPhone customers and this year and next year and for years thereafter, they will want new iPhones.
Finally, prognosticators of market trends, and particularly how Apple applies to the technology industry, should not be allowed to breed.
