Apple does not sell enough accessories. Well, not enough Apple-branded accessories. Look around. Apple Store online or neighborhood Apple Store. How many home-oriented accessories does Apple sell? I got nothin.
I see plenty of iPhone cases, iPad cases and keyboards, Mac cases, cables and add-ons, some camera accessories, and all kinds of non-Apple-branded accessories, but where are the HomeKit-enabled accessories with an Apple logo on the side?
I get it. Apple wants third party manufacturers to get a business going selling and supporting HomeKit-based equipment. Apple sells those, yes, but has nothing much of its own. That needs to change.
Here is want I want with an Apple logo.
Motion Sensor Camera – Apple can do privacy and security better than any other techno-gadget maker, so why not start with a camera system tied into Siri. When someone trips up the motion sensor at home, you get a notice from Siri– voice activated as an alert on your iPhone.
Power Outlet – I won’t put light bulbs on my list because they are inherently stupid and Apple can do better than that with a smart power outlet. A few are on the market already but the baseline for capability should be an Apple-branded model tied to an Apple app.
Show ’em how it’s done, Apple.
Motion Sensor HomePod – This is a security feature, but a no brainer. Have HomePod listen for specific sounds– Alexa does this already– and then send you a notification of whatever tripped up the microphone. How is this not a good idea?
Smart Doorbell – There must be a dozen of these already on the market but few have good reviews, so maybe Apple can do better. Camera, microphone, speaker; built-in two-way communication, and a way to unlock the door remotely. Oh, toss in camera and video recorder, too.
Siri the Robot – Remember Jibo? It was the cutest of robots that was so smart it announced its own death. Jibo was very Apple-like but would have been better with Siri inside. An Apple-branded HomePod-equipped robot of similar stature, including camera and microphone, would be a huge hit. Call it Siri.
Extras – How about tying in some of those features above to iPhone, iPad, and Mac? Camera and motion sensor app as a security feature? Check.
Too much of the HomeKit devices are just plain lame. Apple can help jumpstart the business with its own branded accessories that are not limited to cables and cases. Apple killed Airport but wouldn’t you love a home Wi-Fi AirPort that worked with 5G?
Apple needs more home accessories.
