What do we hate? Passwords. Why do we need passwords? They’re a requirement to log into everything. What’s easier? Anything. Well, almost. That explains why there are Facebook, Google, Twitter, Amazon and other types of co-login systems floating across the interwebs.
Instead of creating yet another new password and login, just use your Facebook account and never think about it again. Apple has a plan to make that even better but it’s too late.
Sign Up Again?
Online sign ups are a major pain but have no better solution. You need a good username, and that requires a password– each for every website, bank, or organization that requires you to login, and their number is growing. I don’t know exactly how many different logins I have with Facebook, Google, Twitter, or Amazon, but one is too many.
Apple has a better plan that I think may be too late for many of us. It’s called ‘Sign In With Apple’ and it works the same way but you use your Apple ID instead, and you have the option to have an anonymous email in case the website needs to contact you. That means no trackers.
Good for Apple. And, because Sign In With Apple is a requirement for iOS and macOS app developers who use Facebook, Google, et al, you will start to see it show up all over the place, especially on iPhone and iPad. Good, right? It gets better. Because it’s Apple, Sign In With Apple does not require a sign in at all. Once it’s set up for a specific website login, just use Face ID or Touch ID to login. It’s automatic. Apple did their typical deed and made something that was relatively easy to be more convenient and with more privacy and security.
Great, right? What’s the downside?
I’ve already signed up for a gazillion websites using Facebook, Google, Twitter, Amazon, et al. I don’t really want to sign up for anything else. Can I go back to each of those websites and register again but with Sign In With Apple instead? Probably; at least for some. But that becomes triple the effort and since I use 1Password for almost every login already– which also works with Touch ID and Face ID, I’m not likely to put out much additional effort.
Yeah, I know. The first time I need to sign up with a new website or business I’ll choose Sign In With Apple so it’ll get used, but I’m tired of adding ever more websites to my list. Where has this new feature been, Apple? Facebook, Google, Twitter, Amazon et al figured it out years ago.
