What do smartphone customers want now? Longer battery life and better cameras. What did Apple give them with iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models? Google’s Pixel 4 is out and while it no longer dominates Apple’s camera and photo results, there are features Apple’s customers might want.
Imagine downloading a video on your iPhone and you want to watch it, but don’t want to irritate others nearby, and you don’t have earbuds with you. Live Caption on Pixel 4 provides real-time, built-in captions for videos. Flick the switch, view the video with captions.
Apple’s Face ID sets the standard for security and convenience, but Pixel 4 has a lift-to-unlock method Apple customers would like. How is it different? On iPhones with Face ID as you lift the device to your face, you get scanned, and the onscreen padlock unlocks. Fast. But you still have to swipe up to get to your apps. Pixel 4 skips the swipe-up step.
See how that works? Slight differences, yes, but some that iPhone 11 customers would like to see.
Here’s another one. Google’s Pixel 4 phones have display resolution similar to the iPhone 11 Pro models. OLED, yes, but Pixel 4 runs at 90Hz which means the display should be smoother; something of a problem for Android phones in general. iPhones excel at smooth scroll and video playback. Here’s the dealbreaker. Pixel 4’s 90Hz rate is only on when the display hits 75-percent brightness, and that impacts battery life two ways.
Power-hungry display, and, well power-hungry bright display. While a 90Hz display is better in theory, it’s like none of us would be able to tell the difference because iPhones are so good already.
Finally, there’s the ongoing battle between Google Assistant and Siri. Most test comparisons between the so-called talking speakers say Assistant is better, Siri is better than Amazon, but none of that matters because they really are not very useful, Siri Shortcuts notwithstanding.
Competition is a good thing. Look what happened to Microsoft when Windows dominated the world. The company completely missed the smartphone revolution when iPhone came along.
